Migrating enterprise apps to the cloud is at the core of digital transformation, but it is not simple.
The Cloud Offers it All
When IT was new, everyone had to write their software from scratch. We now live in an IT universe where all the software needed to run a business pre-competitively is available as a service, in the cloud. When a complete application or suite of applications is offered in the cloud as a service, we call that Software-as-a-Service, or SaaS.
SaaS, PaaS, FaaS, and IaaS Offerings
While some high-level data analytics packages are offered in SaaS form, there are choices for companies who must migrate to the cloud but want to go off-road and stay ahead of competition: Platform-as-a-Service, or PaaS; Functions-as-a-Service, or FaaS; and Infrastructure-as-a-Service, or IaaS. Given that most enterprises have already virtualized their application deployment environment primarily using VMware middleware, Infrastructure-as-a-Service is more like current enterprise IT than PaaS or FaaS.
