The Importance of Memory for IaaS Instance Types and Sizes
Memory size, alongside core count, is a major configuration component of IaaS instance types and sizes, and their pricing. The industry measures memory and storage capacity in gigabytes, abbreviated with a capital “GB”. The most important element of memory size is memory per virtual core. Memory per core is set for an entire instance type. Sizes within a type rarely vary from the type’s overall memory per core profile.
Hard Drives, Solid-State Drives and Storage Class Memory
Companies supplying large amounts of system memory to cloud providers include Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix. Our Liftr Cloud Components Tracker enumerates instance types and sizes with extraordinary detail enabling us to advise customers about the relationships between virtual core provisioning, memory capacity, and pricing.
Liftr Insights will soon begin recording instance type and size local storage. This will include hard drives (HDD) and solid-state drives (SSD) and new storage class memory (SCM) deployments. Liftr Insight plans to measure storage class memory deployments as they occur, in our monthly Liftr Cloud Components Tracker reports.
