Oracle Gets a New Major Partner
Oracle has announced that it has landed a major new partner in The East Midlands, one of nine official regions of England. The East Midlands Shared Services, or EMSS, will implement the Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning Cloud, meaning they will be migrating their on-premises data systems.
EMSS was founded to deliver HR and financial services to both Nottingham City Council and Leicestershire County Council. The shared service operation has already passed its £2 million targeted savings goal, and is hoping to save even more with Oracle.
EMSS hopes that with the partnership, they will deliver key improvements in user experience, business processes and cost reduction. With the help of Oracle, the operation is now able to offer services such as Disclosure Barings Service Recruitment and HR Administration and payroll to their customers.
This deal proves to be a major win for Oracle as they prove their strength among major cloud providers like AWS and Microsoft Azure.
Cloudflare Enlists Google and Microsoft
Cloudflare has enlisted the help of cloud providers such as Google, Microsoft, and a number of others to join a new industry group named the Bandwidth Alliance. The alliance would attempt to waive or greatly discount the fees cloud customers pay for outbounding network services. The alliance members announcement was part of Cloudflare’s eight birthday celebration.
Cloudflare CEO, Matthew Prince, said, “These bandwidth charges, which cloud providers only charge on traffic leaving their networks, creates a bit of the ‘Hotel California’ of services, and makes it so once you choose a cloud provider, it’s hard to move off of them.”
Earlier this week Prince said he was also trying to convince AWS to join the alliance, a move that counteracts their PR’s original pitch stating the alliance was to be a united front against the market power of AWS. Even if they don’t get Amazon behind them, Microsoft announced new Azure Data Box offline data migration products this week at its Ignite event. The new products bring Microsoft’s large dataset migration capabilities into line with Snowball, Snowmobile, and Snowball edge products.

ANZ Selects Google
Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, or ANZ, has announced a partnership with Google to provide business analytics to its institutional customers through the Google Cloud Platform.
The bank selected Google after a proof-of-concept that worked to examine an aggregate of anonymous data sets for customer insights using Google Cloud.
ANZ’s head of Data and Digital for Institutional Customers, Joss Raines, said, “Increasingly, our Institutional customers are looking to us for strategic partnership in addition to the financial products and services we offer. The cloud-based platform can give our bankers meaningful data insights instantly — as it allows us to process data 250 times faster.”
Shell Strikes Big with Microsoft for AI
Shell has struck AI as it landed a partnership with Microsoft earlier this week. The natural gas and oil company will combine Microsoft Azure’s AI capabilities with C3 IoT’s PaaS offering, to create an infrastructure that will allow them to rapidly scale and replicate AI and machine learning applications across its business.
The firm says it plans to initially use the platform to deploy machine vision applications across many of its exploration and retail applications, as well as for machine learning based remote sensor monitoring and predictive maintenance on the hundreds of thousands of critical assets it manages across the globe.
Yuri Sebregts, the Executive Vice-President for Technology and CTO of Shell stated, “Our collaboration with Microsoft gives us a solid digital platform to make our core business more effective and efficient and supports our ambition to provide more and cleaner energy solutions through technology.”
