Seattle-based Amazon has acquired Sqrrl, a security startup based in Cambridge, MA. The acquisition adds Sqrrl to the Amazon Web Services brand.
Sqrrl specializes in software that enables security analysts to uncover, identify, and track down threats. It was founded in 2012 by a group of “core creators, committers and contributors” of Accumulo, an open source database software originated in the NSA.
Sqrrl confirmed the acquisition on its website:
We’ve reached another milestone in our journey!
We’re thrilled to share that Sqrrl has been acquired by Amazon. We will be joining the Amazon Web Services family, and we’re looking forward to working together on customer offerings for the future.
For now, it is business as usual at Sqrrl. We will continue to work with customers to provide advanced threat hunting capabilities. And, over time, we’ll work with AWS to do even more on your behalf. Thank you for your support. We really appreciate the trust customers have put into Sqrrl over the past five years, and we are excited about the next phase of our journey.
Stay tuned!
Mark Terenzoni, Sqrrl CEO
AWS has been growing its security offerings in recent years, including launching new AWS services such as Amazon Macie. Macie is itself the product of another startup acquisition, Harvest.ai.
